Year 2
Yearly Overview
ENGLISH
In the early years the students are working on honing their early English skills, with structured scaffolding through explicit guidance from the Chatham teaching staff.
We are building their skills in reading through modelling and unpacking the necessary skills for reading text starting with rereading for understanding and using punctuation to read with fluency and expression. The students will read fiction and non-fiction and gain a deeper understanding of text through determining what is important in a text by practising summarising and finding the main points.
There are great opportunities for our students to write stories and create information reports. Structure is given for all students to build their understanding of the correct grammar conventions, organisation of paragraphs and sentences and making purposeful word choices.
MATHEMATICS
Mathematics is an integral part of all the students learning and is explicitly taught and integrated throughout the curriculum. Over the four terms of the year the Year 2 students focus on building their foundational knowledge of number counting patterns. When exploring addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, a great variety of concrete materials are manipulated for ‘hands on’ learning and practise. The Mathematics program is very structured and incorporates creative and real world tasks, iPads are used to enhance their learning and differentiated small groups work with the teacher to cater for the needs of all students.
INQUIRY
The students will have four different Inquiry units throughout the year. These include the concepts ‘Changes’, ‘Time’ (past and present), ‘Production’ and ‘Relationships within the Environment’. These concepts give our students a rich experience to work collaboratively designing, negotiating and sharing their creative thoughts and opinions to influence our community through producing and/or constructing a project together.
